I would have appreciated the outline of a modern democratization model, e.g. along the lines of Acemoglu. Moreover, the exclusion of any reference to the Kuznets curve hypothesis (and perhaps lack of applicability in China?) seems conspicuous, given that economic models to describe it exist, again see Acemoglu.
